A Nairobi safari is usually a day trip to Nairobi National Park, just 20 minutes from the city center. Expect open savanna with scattered acacia trees, not the endless plains of Maasai Mara. In a typical 8-9 hour tour you’ll see zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, and often lions or rhinos; you might also stop at the Giraffe Centre or an elephant orphanage. It’s convenient but feels more like a zoo visit with wilder moments than a proper bush experience. Game viewing is decent, yet animals are somewhat habituated to vehicles and crowds.
The dry season from July to October is best; animals gather at water sources and the grass is shorter, making sightings easier. January-February is a good second choice. Expect to pay around $50-80 for a half-day park trip with basic transport and guide, $120-200 for a fuller day that includes the orphanage and giraffe centre. Multi-day trips to Maasai Mara start from about $200-400 per person depending on group size and accommodation.
Pick a small-group tour (4-6 people max) with a knowledgeable driver-guide who actually stops for photography instead of rushing. Skip the big 30-seater bus tours that race between animals and spend more time at souvenir shops than on the plains. Bring binoculars, patience for Nairobi traffic, and realistic expectations: it’s a solid introduction, not the safari of a lifetime.
