San Sebastian Day Trip from Puerto Vallarta

A San Sebastian del Oeste day trip gets you out of Puerto Vallarta’s humidity and into the Sierra Madre mountains. Expect a winding two-hour drive each way through scenic countryside, followed by a few hours wandering the quiet historic mining town. You’ll see the main square, old church, a small museum, and usually a stop at a raicilla distillery where they explain how the local spirit is made. It’s low-key and genuinely different from the beach scene—think cooler temperatures, cobblestones, and a much slower pace. Most tours include lunch at a local spot serving basic Mexican food.

Best time is November through April when it’s dry and the mountain roads are less likely to have issues. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person for a full-day trip including transport, guide, distillery visit, and lunch. Private tours sit at the higher end. One solid tip: choose the version that includes the raicilla tasting if you like spirits—it’s the most interesting part. Skip the horse-riding add-on unless you really want saddle time; the town itself is small and easily covered on foot in a couple of hours.
