Sea Lion Snorkeling in Los Cabos: What to Know

Snorkeling with sea lions in the Los Cabos area usually means a long day trip up to the Sea of Cortez, most often around La Paz or Cabo Pulmo. Expect a 2–3 hour boat ride each way, cold water (even in summer you’ll want a 3–5 mm wetsuit), and curious but wild sea lions that zoom past you, bark underwater, and sometimes playfully nip at fins. The actual snorkel time is often only 30–45 minutes per site. Visibility is usually good to excellent, but it’s a real ocean experience – choppy rides, strong currents possible, and no guarantees the sea lions will show up in huge numbers every day. It’s genuinely fun if you like marine life, but tiring if you’re prone to seasickness.

Best time is May through November when the water is warmest (mid-70s to low 80s °F). December–April brings bigger swells, colder water, and more wind, though marine life can be abundant. Expect to pay around $150–$250 per person for a full-day trip that includes transport from Cabo, snacks, and basic gear. Private or small-group options push toward the higher end.

Pick a tour that goes to a marine park or protected area rather than a generic “sea lion colony stop” on a party catamaran – the difference in animal behavior and reef health is noticeable. Skip anything that promises guaranteed close encounters or lets 30+ people in the water at once; smaller groups (8–12 max) give you far better experience and less stress on the animals.
