Similan Islands Snorkeling from Phuket: What You Need to Know

The Similan Islands are one of the best snorkeling destinations in Thailand. Expect bright turquoise water, healthy hard coral gardens, and lots of marine life — reef fish, turtles, occasional reef sharks, and rays. A typical day trip from Phuket is long (10–11 hours total) with about 2.5–3 hours actually in the water across 3–4 stops. The boat rides are bumpy, especially on the way back, and the islands get crowded mid-day. It’s a proper full-day commitment but the underwater scenery is genuinely impressive if conditions are good.

The best time is December to April when the Andaman Sea is calmest and visibility is often 15–30 meters. Avoid May–October — the park is usually closed and the weather is rough. Expect to pay around $130–$180 per person for a speedboat tour from Phuket, including lunch, gear, and national park fees. Cheaper tours exist but usually mean older boats, more people, and less time in the water.

Tip: Choose a smaller group tour (under 30 people) that visits the quieter northern islands instead of the standard overcrowded southern route. Skip the add-on “premium” speedboat upgrades that just cost more for the same itinerary. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof dry bag — rental ones are often poor quality.
