Snorkeling Near Manila: Is It Worth It?

Snorkeling tours from Manila usually mean a long drive (2–4 hours) to either Anilao in Batangas or the islands off Cavite/Bataan. Expect a full-day trip on a local outrigger boat with 6–12 other people. The snorkeling itself is decent for a city escape: you’ll see colorful soft corals, lots of tropical fish, occasional turtles, and sometimes small reef sharks in Anilao. Visibility ranges from 5–15 meters depending on the weather and season. It’s not world-class like Palawan or Dumaguete, but it’s surprisingly okay if you set your expectations right. Most tours include mask, snorkel, fins, lunch, and basic guidance.

The best time is December to May when the water is calmer and visibility is better. June to October brings rougher seas and rain, so many operators cancel or run fewer trips. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person for a day trip from Manila, depending on group size, distance, and whether they include hotel transfers. Smaller private groups cost more.

Pick an Anilao trip if you care about better marine life. Skip the closer “island-hopping” tours near Manila that focus more on swimming and photos than actual snorkeling. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and snacks — the provided food is usually basic. If you’re a strong swimmer and have realistic expectations, it’s a solid one-day nature break from the city.
