Snorkeling in Phuket: Worth It?

Expect a full-day boat trip (usually 8-9 hours) with 3-4 snorkel stops, decent buffet lunch, and a mix of beautiful coral reefs and crowded swim platforms. The clearer days deliver vibrant fish and occasional turtles or reef sharks; visibility can drop to 5-8 meters after rain. Most trips visit either the nearby Khai Islands for easy snorkeling or head further to Phi Phi/Maya Bay for bigger scenery but longer travel and more boats. It's a solid day out if you like being on the water, though it rarely feels like a pristine wilderness experience.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmest and visibility is usually good. May-October brings cheaper prices but rougher waves, rain, and poorer visibility—many operators cancel or reroute. Expect to pay around $40-70 for a standard speedboat tour; $100-150 for smaller-group or catamaran trips with better food and fewer people. Prices usually include gear, lunch, and pickup from your hotel.

Pick a morning-departure trip to the Khai Islands or Racha if you want relaxed snorkeling and fewer crowds. Skip the big Phi Phi speedboat tours unless you specifically want the Maya Bay photo stop—they're rushed, packed, and spend more time motoring than snorkeling. Bring your own mask if you have one; rental gear is often well-used.
