Expect a relaxed paddle with beautiful views of either Copacabana’s sweeping beach and Sugarloaf or the calmer waters of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Most tours last 1.5–2 hours and mix easy paddling with a few stops for photos and basic instruction. It’s genuinely beginner-friendly; you’ll spend more time standing and gliding than falling in. The experience feels active but not exhausting – a nice way to see the city from the water without the crowds of a boat tour. Sunrise tours are especially popular because the light on the mountains is spectacular and the sea is usually flattest at that hour.
The best time is May to September (winter), when the weather is drier, temperatures are milder, and the ocean is calmer. Avoid December–February if you don’t like heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $75–110 per person for a small-group tour with equipment and a guide. Private sessions run higher. Book a morning session; skip the big-group sunset tours if you want a more peaceful experience – they can feel rushed and crowded.
