Stingray Encounter in Auckland: What to Know

Expect to be in shallow, clear water at a marine reserve like Goat Island, swimming among dozens of stingrays that glide right up to you. The rays are wild but habituated to snorkelers; they’ll brush against you while you also see snapper, blue maomao, and occasional octopus. The tour usually lasts 2–3 hours including the boat ride, wetsuit fitting, and snorkel time. It’s a genuinely good wildlife encounter if you’re comfortable in the water, but the rays are the main draw – the fish are a bonus.

Best time is December to April when the water is warmest (around 18–21°C) and visibility is better. You’ll still need a 5mm wetsuit provided by the operator. Expect to pay around NZ$150–220 per person for a half-day guided snorkel trip. Cheaper options exist but often mean larger groups and less time in the water.

Pick the “advanced” or longer snorkel tour if available – it gets you more time with the rays away from crowds. Skip the cage-free “swim with sharks” add-ons in the same area; they’re often disappointing and not worth the extra money. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them – rental gear is average at best.
