Casablanca isn’t a top global surf destination, but it offers surprisingly consistent waves and a laid-back scene right on the city’s Atlantic coast. Expect a 90-minute to 2-hour lesson that starts with basic safety, how to paddle, and pop-up technique on the sand before you head into the water. The waves are usually gentle and forgiving for beginners – think 2-4 ft – but the water stays cool year-round so you’ll wear a wetsuit. Lessons typically happen on calmer stretches near the Corniche or slightly west of the main port. Groups are small or private; don’t expect pristine tropical water or empty lineups – you’ll share the ocean with locals, fishermen, and the odd jet ski.
The best time is May through October when winds are lighter and water temperatures are highest (still only 19-22°C). Winter brings bigger swells but stronger winds and colder water. Expect to pay around $35–65 for a private lesson including board and wetsuit; group lessons run cheaper at $25–40. One solid tip: book a private or semi-private session if you actually want to improve – group lessons can turn into crowd management. Skip the big hotel packages that add transport from downtown; they inflate the price for the same surf school experience. Just grab a taxi to the beach instead.
