Expect a mix of instruction and actual wave time. Most lessons run 2 hours on the water after 20-30 minutes of beach safety and technique talk. You'll start on soft-top boards in waist-deep water, focusing on popping up and riding small broken waves. Groups are usually 4-6 people per instructor. The full-day versions add a second session, lunch, and transport out of the city to quieter beaches like those around Botany Bay. City beaches such as Bondi are more convenient but can be crowded with both learners and locals.
Best time is December to April when water is warmer (18-22°C) and waves tend to be smaller and friendlier for beginners. Winter (June-August) has bigger swells and colder water that requires a thicker wetsuit. Expect to pay around A$80-150 for a standard 2-hour group lesson; full-day trips with lunch and transfer run A$180-280. Private lessons add A$100-150 on top.
Pick a lesson that includes a short transfer to a less crowded beach if you want more actual surfing time; skip the ultra-cheap ones that pack 8+ students per instructor. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and a change of clothes. The experience is more tiring than most people expect – you'll use muscles you didn't know you had.
