Sutro Baths Hike in San Francisco

The Sutro Baths hike takes you along the Lands End Trail to the ruins of an old 1890s bathhouse perched above the Pacific. Expect dramatic cliffs, wind, and a mix of paved path and dirt trail with some moderate ups and downs. The ruins themselves are concrete foundations and tunnels you can explore at your own pace; it's atmospheric rather than polished. Most people combine it with a stop at the nearby Cliff House overlook. The full round-trip from the trailhead is about 3 miles and takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on how long you linger. It's exposed, so you'll feel the fog or sun directly.

Best time is late spring through early fall when the wind is milder and days are longer. Summer mornings often have clearer views before the afternoon fog rolls in; winter can be beautiful but expect rain, mud, and stronger gusts. Expect to pay around $0–35 total per person: the hike itself is free if you drive or take public transit to the trailhead, while guided group tours that include pickup from Fisherman's Wharf run higher.

Pick the self-guided version if you like setting your own pace and don't mind navigating; the interpretive signs are decent. Skip the guided tours that start from Fisherman's Wharf unless you really want the transportation—the extra time spent in traffic and at crowded stops isn't worth it for most people. Bring a windbreaker, good shoes, and a charged phone for photos.
