Swimming with Dolphins in Mauritius: What You Should Know

Expect a very early start (usually 6-7am) from the west or north coast to reach the pods before they move offshore. The experience is basically a boat ride until you spot dolphins, then you slip into the water for short, guided snorkel sessions. The dolphins are wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins; they may come close and play or they may keep their distance. Most trips last 2.5–4 hours and include some reef snorkeling afterwards if conditions allow. It’s exciting when it works but can feel rushed if the sea is choppy or the animals aren’t in the mood.

The best time is October to April when the sea is calmer and dolphin sightings are more consistent. Avoid July–September if you get seasick; the trade winds make the west coast rollers quite unpleasant. Expect to pay around $50–90 per person for a standard group trip; private or smaller-boat options sit at the higher end. Book through a reputable west-coast operator rather than the cheapest mass-market boats that sometimes overcrowd the dolphins.

Tip: Choose a trip that caps numbers at 8–10 swimmers and promises “no chasing” – these tend to be calmer for both you and the animals. Skip any operator that guarantees close encounters or lets people jump in repeatedly; that usually stresses the pods. Bring your own snorkel gear if you can – rental sets are often old and leaky.
