A half-day tour to Tagaytay gets you out of Manila's traffic and heat into noticeably cooler air, rolling hills, and views of Taal Volcano sitting in its lake. Expect a relaxed drive with stops at a couple of scenic viewpoints, a quick pass through a fruit market where you can buy strawberries or buko pie, and some basic commentary about the area. It's not wildly adventurous but it's an easy way to see countryside without renting a car or dealing with public transport. The experience is mostly passive - you're in a vehicle for a good portion of it, with short photo stops.
Best time is December to February when it's genuinely cooler and less rainy. Avoid the peak typhoon months (July-October) and don't expect perfect volcano views in the rainy season. Expect to pay around $40-90 per person for a half-day group tour from Manila; private tours run $120-250 depending on group size. The full-day versions that combine Manila sightseeing with Tagaytay tend to feel rushed.
Pick the simpler half-day countryside version over anything that promises too many stops. Skip the horse rides and touristy restaurants near the main ridge - they're overpriced and nothing special. Bring cash for snacks and small purchases at the market.
