Zurich's Polybahn Funicular: Worth It?

The Polybahn is a short, steep funicular that climbs from near Zurich's old town (Central station area) up to the university and ETH campus. The ride itself lasts under two minutes but gives surprisingly good views over the rooftops, the Limmat River, and the old city's towers. You stand or sit in a historic-looking carriage that feels more like a tram than a tourist trap. At the top you step out onto a plaza with benches and wide-open vistas; it's a quick, efficient way to gain altitude without hiking. Expect a mix of locals commuting and visitors snapping photos. It's not thrilling like a mountain cable car, but it's smooth, clean, and genuinely pleasant on a clear day.

Best time is late afternoon in spring or early autumn when the light is soft and crowds are lighter. Summer can be hot and busy; winter offers crisp views but the ride feels colder. Expect to pay around CHF 2–6 per person depending on whether you use a day pass, single ticket, or Zurich Card. A single adult ticket is the simplest if you're only doing this once.

Tip: ride up and walk down the winding paths through the university gardens instead of riding back down – the descent on foot is prettier and takes about 15 minutes. Skip any “guided Polybahn tour” packages; you don't need them for this straightforward ride. Just buy a ticket from the machine at the bottom and go.
