Expect a dimly lit room with 30-60 people, live musicians (usually quartet or quintet), and dancers performing in a more raw, less theatrical style. The energy is intimate but can feel slightly awkward if you're the only tourist in the room. You'll usually get a basic milonga-style dance floor after the performance where locals dance. It's closer to the real culture than the dinner-show circuit, but it's still a performance aimed at visitors, just a subtler one.

Best time is May to September (Buenos Aires winter) when the serious tango scene is most active. Avoid January and February — many locals leave the city.
