Should You Climb Dunn's River Falls in Montego Bay?

Expect a crowded, lively climb up a wide, terraced limestone waterfall about 600 feet high. You'll be holding hands in a human chain with your guide and other tourists, stepping on slippery rocks while cold river water rushes over your feet and knees. It's more like a team hike than extreme adventure — fun and social if you like that, tiring and chaotic if you don't. The whole experience including transport from Montego Bay usually takes 4–5 hours. The falls themselves are beautiful, but the scene at the bottom feels like a theme park with vendors, music, and hundreds of people.

The best time to go is December through April when it's drier and slightly less humid. Avoid peak cruise-ship days if you can; the falls get packed. Expect to pay around $75–$110 per person from Montego Bay, including transport, guide, and entrance. Life vests and water shoes are usually provided.

Tip: Choose a small-group morning tour and skip the “VIP” packages — they rarely deliver real value. Wear reef-safe water shoes with good grip and bring a dry bag for your phone. If you're not into crowds or physical activity in the sun, skip it entirely and head to a quieter beach instead.
