YS Falls is a series of seven tiered waterfalls and natural pools about 90 minutes from Montego Bay. The trip usually combines the falls with a Black River pontoon boat ride through mangrove swamp where you’ll see crocodiles. Expect a scenic but winding drive through countryside. At the falls you’ll walk up a maintained trail, swim in cold clear pools, and jump or slide at a couple of spots if you’re comfortable in the water. The boat portion is relaxed wildlife viewing rather than thrill-seeking. The whole day normally runs 7–8 hours door-to-door including pickup, travel, and stops.
Best time is December to April when it’s drier and the water is clearest. June–November is greener but rain can make the falls muddy and the roads slower. Expect to pay around $140–$190 per person for a small-group or private tour with transport from Montego Bay; cheaper if you join a larger bus tour, more if you want it fully private. Entrance and lunch are usually included.
Pick the version that includes both YS Falls and the Black River boat ride – the two complement each other well. Skip the longer combo tours that also cram in a rum factory or long beach stop; they feel rushed. Bring water shoes if you have them, and skip the expensive locker rental by wearing a swimsuit under your clothes.
