Melbourne Zoo: Worth a Visit?

Melbourne Zoo is a solid, well-kept mid-sized zoo with decent habitats and a strong collection of Australian animals. Expect to spend 3–4 hours if you want to see everything at a relaxed pace. The primate area, big cats, and the Australian walk-through section are the clear highlights. It gets busy on weekends and school holidays, so you’ll be sharing space with plenty of families and strollers. The layout is mostly flat and easy to walk, but it still involves a fair bit of ground.

The best time to visit is spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May) when the weather is mild and animals are more active. Summer can be hot and crowded; winter is quieter but some animals stay indoors. Expect to pay around AU$40–55 for an adult ticket depending on timing and any add-ons. Kids are cheaper and often free on certain weekdays.

Tip: Book the Australian Bush walk if it’s offered on your day — seeing kangaroos up close and meeting the koala or wombat ambassador is genuinely the best part. Skip the elephant exhibit if you’re short on time; it’s fine but not the standout. Bring your own water and snacks — the on-site food is average and overpriced.
