Melbourne Zoo: Is It Worth It?

Melbourne Zoo is a solid, well-run zoo with decent space for the animals and a strong focus on Australian wildlife. Expect a full day of walking on mostly gentle hills. The primate and big cat areas are highlights, as are the free-flight bird shows and the seal presentations. It gets very busy on weekends and school holidays, with long queues at the entrance and popular exhibits. On a quiet weekday you can move around comfortably and actually enjoy watching the animals rather than crowds of people.

Best time to visit is spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May) when the weather is mild. Summer can be uncomfortably hot for both you and the animals, and many of them hide. Expect to pay around AU$55–75 per adult for a standard ticket depending on whether you buy direct or through a reseller. Kids are cheaper and under-4s are usually free. Add food and transport and you’re looking at roughly AU$80–110 per person for the day.

Honest tip: just buy the basic entry ticket and walk the zoo at your own pace – that’s plenty. Skip the paid “behind the scenes” or “animal encounter” add-ons unless you specifically want to hand-feed a giraffe; they’re expensive and don’t dramatically improve the day. Bring your own water and snacks – the on-site food is average and overpriced.
