A three-aisled stone Byzantine basilica built in 1298, this monastery of St. George is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in the Serres region, notable for its hagiographies and iconography including the outstanding Panagia Vrefokratousa from 1694. The church holds significant historical symbolism as the site where Serres surrendered to the Ottomans in 1383 and where the Greek liberation army was received in 1913.
