The Basilica Cistern is a vast underground chamber built in the 6th century beneath Istanbul, containing 336 marble columns arranged in a cathedral-like space. Visitors descend 52 stone steps into this ancient Byzantine reservoir and walk along elevated wooden walkways through the columned underground chamber, which was originally capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters of water.
