The Monastery of Prophet Elias, built in 1711, stands at 567 meters above sea level on Mount Profitis Ilias near Pyrgos village, making it the highest point on Santorini with tremendous views of the island. A stunning example of Cycladic fortress architecture, the monastery itself is closed to visitors, but four surrounding churches and chapels can be visited, and monks still produce traditional Santorini wines and goods available for purchase.
