The National Museum of Brazil is the oldest scientific institution in the country, founded in 1818 and housed in the former Imperial Palace (Paço de São Cristóvão). Before a 2018 fire, it held approximately 20 million objects spanning natural history, ethnology, and archaeology, including one of the world's largest collections of anthropological artifacts and specimens from multiple cultures and civilizations.
