The Roman Forum is a rectangular plaza surrounded by ruins of important ancient Roman government buildings at the center of Rome, located in the valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills. For centuries it served as the hub of Roman civic life—the site of elections, public speeches, criminal trials, triumphal processions, and commercial and legal affairs. Today visitors explore the sprawling archaeological site with its architectural fragments and surviving structures including temples, basilicas, and the Senate House, attracting millions of yearly visitors.
