The oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, covering 37 hectares and originally established in 1770, this garden is famous for its long pond of giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica) and features spices, ebonies, sugar canes, and 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa, and the Indian Ocean islands. Visitors come to see the distinctive giant water lilies and walk through collections of tropical plants, many planted by world leaders and royalty.
