La Brea Tar Pits is the world's only actively excavated Ice Age fossil site located in an urban area, where animals, plants, and insects have been preserved in sticky asphalt for over 50,000 years. Visitors can explore Hancock Park's walking paths around active excavation sites, the iconic Lake Pit with mammoth models, and view fossils ranging from extinct mammoths to microscopic remains. The museum is currently closed for a two-year renovation, but outdoor areas and excavation sites remain open to the public.
