Walk the legendary 17km ridge trail linking Fatu Hiva's two villages, through wild goat country and cloud forest, with sweeping views down onto both bays.
What to expect
You set out from Omoa on a red-dirt track climbing steadily through pandanus and wild hibiscus, with feral goats scattering ahead of you. Midway, the trail crests a ridge with a view down both coastlines simultaneously, a genuinely rare vantage in the Marquesas. Your guide, a native of one of the two villages, narrates the island's oral history and points out medicinal plants. A 4x4 meets you partway for the descent into Hanavave, timed to the tender schedule.
Good to know
Full trek takes 6-7 hours; arrange the guided half with vehicle pickup if in port for a single day. Wear real hiking shoes; there is little shade and it's hot even by 9am.
