What to expect
A Land Rover track drops you near the settlement, then it's a 45-minute walk across open ground to The Neck. Rockhoppers surf ashore in the kelp just below the albatross colony, and king penguins stand apart from the noisier rockhopper groups. The light here in the early morning, before other visitors arrive, is what people remember most.
Good to know
Book ahead through the settlement office as landing numbers are capped; wear waterproof boots for the peat and sand track, and budget at least 3 hours round trip from the shore landing.
