Batavia Shipwreck & Mutiny History Walk, Beacon Island

Stand on the tiny coral cay where the 1629 Batavia wreck's survivors turned to mutiny and massacre — one of the most extraordinary and least-known stories in maritime history.

What to expect

Your boat anchors off Beacon Island, once called 'Batavia's Graveyard'. A historian guide walks the group across the low coral outcrop, pointing out foundation stones from the survivors' shelters and explaining the mutiny, trials and executions that followed the wreck. You'll also see fragments of the wreck itself, some still visible in shallow water nearby. It's a sobering, vivid contrast to the archipelago's beauty elsewhere.

Good to know

This runs as part of specific Eco Abrolhos day or multi-day cruises with a historian aboard — confirm the guide is scheduled for your date, as not every departure carries one. Sturdy reef shoes recommended for the uneven coral rock.
