Noss National Nature Reserve: Seabird Cliffs by Boat

Sail beneath towering 180m cliffs on Noss teeming with gannets, puffins and skuas — one of Britain's great seabird spectacles, seen from the water at eye level with the colonies.

What to expect

You board a rigid-hull boat from Lerwick harbour and cruise across Bressay Sound to the base of the Noss cliffs. The skipper cuts the engine near the Cradle Holm gannetry so you can watch thousands of birds wheeling and diving in near silence. Seals often haul out nearby, and on calm days you can get remarkably close to the rock face. It's a bracing, wide-open-air experience best in a warm layer and waterproofs.

Good to know

Runs weather-dependent April–August (peak seabird season); book the earliest sailing to allow flexibility if it's cancelled and rescheduled before your ship departs. Departs from Lerwick's small boat harbour, a short walk from the cruise berth.
