Sail to Mousa to climb Scotland's best-preserved Iron Age broch, a 2,000-year-old drystone tower still standing 13 metres high on its own islet.
What to expect
The boat departs from Sandsayre pier in Sandwick, about 30 minutes south of Lerwick, crossing calm water to Mousa. You land beside the broch and can climb its internal stone staircase to the wallhead for views over the sound. The island's beaches often have basking seals, and outside daytime sailings, evening trips bring the added spectacle of storm petrels returning to nest inside the broch's walls at dusk.
Good to know
Requires a taxi or transfer to Sandwick pier before boarding; check tide-dependent sailing times the morning of your call. Evening storm petrel sailings (June–July) are magical but won't fit a same-day cruise call — the daytime crossing is the realistic option.
