Lerwick Old Town & Fort Charlotte Walking Tour

Wander the flagstone lanes, closes and stone piers of Lerwick's old town with a local historian — the real texture of a Shetland town, not a souvenir strip.

What to expect

Starting at Fort Charlotte, the 17th-century artillery fort overlooking the harbour, your guide leads you down through the narrow lodberries (merchant houses built directly over the water) and into the old town's maze of closes. You'll hear about Shetland's Norse heritage, the herring boom years, and life during WWII's 'Shetland Bus' resistance operations. The walk ends near the harbourfront, timed for a coffee before returning to the ship.
