Board a private Zodiac as the sun drops toward the Pacific horizon and circumnavigate the full perimeter of Ducie Atoll — watching the coral shallows ignite in amber and gold while seabirds return to roost in their millions. Pure, unrepeatable spectacle.
What to expect
Departing in the late afternoon, the Zodiac rounds the atoll's outermost tip where ocean swells break against the reef in dramatic slow explosions of white water. As the sun descends, the lagoon interior turns from turquoise to liquid gold, and the sky above the islets fills with the returning flight of hundreds of thousands of seabirds — a natural spectacle of almost cinematic scale. Chilled champagne is served at anchor in the lagoon as darkness approaches. You return to the ship with photographs and a memory that no other port in the world could provide.
Good to know
Timing is entirely dependent on the ship's all-aboard requirement — confirm exact sunset time and required return time before booking. Light layers are recommended as temperatures drop noticeably on the water after sunset. This excursion is subject to sea-state approval on the day; have an alternative afternoon activity as a contingency.
