Journey through all eight of Beppu's legendary geothermal 'Hells' — cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku, blood-red Chinoike, and roaring geyser Tatsumaki — with a nationally-licensed multilingual guide. A surreal, bucket-list immersion into Japan's most dramatic volcanic landscape.
What to expect
Your guide meets you portside and whisks you in a private vehicle to the Kannawa district, where eight distinctly different hotspring spectacles await. Stand at the edge of the vivid cobalt pool of Umi Jigoku, watch the geyser at Tatsumaki erupt on its precise schedule, and feel the eerie stillness over Shiraike's milky-white waters. At the celebrated Chinoike Jigoku — the 'Blood Pond Hell' — your guide explains the 1,300-year mythology behind its vermillion hue. The full circuit runs approximately three hours at a civilised, luxury pace with photography stops built in.
Good to know
Pre-book directly via the J-G-A website specifying your all-aboard time; a half-day tour fits comfortably within a standard port day. The Hells are spread across two clusters, ~2 km apart — private vehicle is essential. Wear comfortable walking shoes; some paths are uneven. A combined entry pass covering all hells costs approx. JPY 2,000–2,400 per adult and is purchased on-site.
