Ascend 1,375 metres above sea level on the Beppu Ropeway for a breathtaking panorama stretching from the geothermal steam plumes of the city below to the shimmering expanse of Beppu Bay and the peaks of the Kuju range. On clear days, Shikoku Island is visible across the Bungo Channel.
What to expect
The gondola departs from a station in the Tsurumi highlands, climbing steadily through pine and cedar forest before breaking into open sky near the summit. At the top, walking trails fan out across volcanic meadows and, in season, wild flowers carpet the hillside. On the observation deck, interpretive panels identify the volcanic peaks of Kyushu's interior. Staff at the summit café serve locally-sourced Oita tea and light refreshments with the panorama as backdrop. The descent, particularly at dusk, illuminates Beppu's steam-scape in golden light.
Good to know
The ropeway operates from approximately 09:00–17:00 (last ascent 16:30); check the official site for seasonal adjustments. A taxi or pre-arranged private vehicle (approx. 20 minutes from the port) is the most convenient option — parking at the base station is available. Summit temperatures are approximately 5°C cooler than the city; bring a light layer. Combine efficiently with the Jigoku Meguri hells in the lower city for a full-day itinerary.
