Slip into the open ocean alongside humpback whales as they nurse their calves in Moorea's warm waters — a once-in-a-lifetime encounter available only between July and October. This is arguably the most extraordinary wildlife experience in all of French Polynesia.
What to expect
A rigid inflatable research vessel departs the lagoon and heads into open water where humpbacks congregate to breed and calve each austral winter. When a whale is located, the guide enters the water first to assess behaviour, then signals guests to slip in quietly. You may find yourself floating 10 metres from a 40-tonne mother and calf, the whale's song vibrating through your chest. Encounters average 45–90 minutes of active in-water time across multiple whales. The captain and biologist narrate behaviour in real time from the boat. Hot drinks and a full briefing are included.
Good to know
Strictly seasonal: July–October only — confirm your cruise dates align. Group sizes are capped at 4–6 for minimum whale disturbance. Pre-book weeks in advance; this sells out fast on port days. Not suitable for non-swimmers. Full-day tour — verify all-aboard time before booking and discuss with operator.
