What to expect
The trail begins in a taro plantation at the valley floor, climbing gently through dense tropical foliage draped in mosses and giant ferns, with the guide identifying edible and medicinal plants at every turn. At the Afareaitu Waterfall — a double-tiered cascade roughly 20 metres high — guests swim in a natural jungle pool beneath the falls, one of Moorea's most serene moments. On the descent, the guide leads a short detour to a little-visited marae, explaining the sacred significance of the coral-stone platforms in pre-European Polynesian society. Fresh tropical fruit is served streamside. Total hiking time is approximately 2–3 hours.

Moderate difficulty; suitable for most fitness levels — no technical climbing required. Wear swimwear under hiking clothes and bring a dry bag for valuables. Depart by 8 am to complete comfortably before all-aboard. Insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen essential. Tender port — allow 20 min water transfer each way.
