Join a marine biologist aboard a private vessel for a guided encounter with the Maldives' legendary whale sharks and manta rays in their natural habitat. This is bucket-list ocean wildlife at its absolute finest — swimming alongside the ocean's largest fish.
What to expect
A MWSRP marine biologist briefs you on responsible encounter etiquette before boarding a purpose-equipped research vessel from Malé harbour. The team uses real-time spotter data to locate whale sharks and manta aggregations in South Ari Atoll waters, typically a 45-minute transit. You'll enjoy two to three 30-minute in-water sessions with snorkel and mask, with the scientist narrating behaviour and identifying individuals by their unique spot patterns in real time. High-quality mask and fins are provided.
Good to know
Departure is early — typically 06:30 — to reach peak feeding grounds; confirm all-aboard clearance before booking. Whale sharks are seasonal (peak: Nov–May), but year-round sightings are common. This excursion is snorkel-only (no scuba required). Book directly via MWSRP's eco-tourism page at least 3–4 weeks in advance.
