Set foot on the remote sandy islets of Ashmore to walk among nesting frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, and rare shorebirds under the guidance of a specialist ornithologist. One of the least-visited wildlife sites in the entire Indian Ocean.
What to expect
A Zodiac lands you on blindingly white coral-sand where great frigatebirds nest just metres from the path. Your ornithologist guide leads a slow, respectful circuit, pausing to observe red-footed boobies, brown noddies, and migratory waders. The islets are utterly flat and treeless — the sense of being at the edge of the world is profound. Expect to spend 60–90 minutes ashore, with time to simply stand in the extraordinary silence.
Good to know
Landing permits are tightly controlled; numbers are capped per session. Wear closed shoes, a wide-brim hat, and reef-safe sunscreen. Photography is excellent in the early morning golden hour — request the first Zodiac tender if possible.
