Paddle in silence through Pomene's ancient mangrove labyrinth, where clouds of flamingos and kingfishers nest just metres away. One of southern Africa's most intimate wildlife encounters, entirely off the tourist trail.
What to expect
Launch from a quiet creek mouth and weave through cathedral-like mangrove tunnels, roots arching overhead. Flamingos wade in the shallows ahead; fish eagles perch at eye level. The guide pauses frequently to explain the ecosystem — mangroves as nurseries for the reef fish you saw snorkelling. Finish with sweet coconut water served on the bank as the tide turns.
