What to expect
A short 4×4 ride or guided uphill walk deposits you at Tehaatiki, where the entire volcanic bay stretches below in a tableau that stops conversation dead. Your guide explains how Taiohae served as the Marquesas' political and spiritual capital for centuries. Back in the village, the cathedral's carved-wood interior — every panel a masterwork of Marquesan motifs — rewards slow, careful looking. The nearby Tiki Tuhiva stone figures, their faces worn by centuries of rain, stand at the edge of a ceremonial plaza where chiefs once held court. A short walk to the stone-paved royal tohua completes the circuit.
Good to know
This half-day excursion (3–4 hrs) is perfectly suited to tender schedules. The cathedral is open daily; modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is required inside. The Tehaatiki trail has some steep sections — flat, closed-toe shoes are recommended. Book guides through the tourist office, ideally before arrival.
