Slip beneath Taiohae Bay's surface to one of the Marquesas' most electrifying dive sites — Sentinel Rock — where manta rays cruise cleaning stations and hammerhead sharks patrol the blue. Marquesas diving is raw, current-driven, and utterly world-class.
What to expect
The dive centre is a five-minute walk from the tender pier, streamlining your turnaround. Briefings are meticulous — your Marquesan divemaster outlines current patterns and explains the cleaning station behaviour you're about to witness. Sentinel Rock's wall plunges to over 30 m, draped in black coral and patrolled by grey reef sharks, Galapagos sharks, and, on lucky dives, the silhouette of a manta banking overhead. Surface intervals are spent on a small tender with cold water and local fruit while your guide recounts the mythology of the sea in Marquesan culture.
Good to know
Certification to Open Water level required; Advanced recommended for the deeper sections. The dive centre can verify certification and complete paperwork same-morning if you email ahead. Plan dives for the morning tide when visibility peaks (often 20–30 m). Taiohae Bay is within 10 mins of the tender dock — timing is tight but manageable with pre-arrangement.
