Conquer the steaming rim of Vulcano's Gran Cratere, then plunge into the island's famous sulphur mud pools — a surreal, skin-renewing ritual that has drawn travellers since antiquity. Two utterly contrasting Aeolian experiences in one extraordinary day.
What to expect
A private speedboat from Marina Corta delivers you to Vulcano Porto in under 30 minutes. Your guide leads the 45-minute crater ascent through lunar sulphur-yellow terrain, rewarding you at the top with panoramic views across the entire Aeolian archipelago and billowing fumarole vents. Back at the waterfront, you immerse in the famous Pozze di Fanghi sulphur mud pools — volcanic geothermal at its most indulgent — before rinsing off in the warm, naturally carbonated sea. Lunch at a harbourfront restaurant before the boat returns to Lipari.
Good to know
Wear clothes and swimwear you don't mind staining — sulphur mud is permanent on fabric. Crater hiking shoes essential. The round trip to Vulcano and back fits well into a half-day (4h), making it ideal for ships with afternoon all-aboard times. Hydrofoils also run regularly from Lipari to Vulcano (approx. EUR 10–15 return).
