Ascend the iconic red-capped Vuurtoren Texel lighthouse for panoramic views across the Wadden Sea and North Sea, then lose yourself in the sweeping dunescapes of Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel. A sublime North Sea landscape experience.
What to expect
The 19th-century red-and-white striped lighthouse stands at the island's northern tip, and climbing its spiral staircase rewards you with a 360° panorama stretching from the Wadden Sea mudflats to the open North Sea horizon. Immediately adjacent, Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel unfolds across 4,000 hectares of undulating dunes, heathland, and forest. Rare orchids, marsh harriers, and spoonbills make this a birder's paradise. The crisp North Sea air and theatrical cloudscapes make every photograph extraordinary.
Good to know
Hire a bike in Den Burg or Oudeschild (approx. EUR 12–18/day) to reach the lighthouse — the cycle through the dunes is half the experience. Allow 3–4 hours total. The lighthouse is closed in severe weather; check vuurtoren-texel.nl before departing the ship.
