Push into Vanikoro's almost wholly pristine old-growth rainforest with a specialist naturalist guide — one of the last truly intact island forests in the Solomon Islands, home to endemic birds, giant butterflies, and trees that have never seen a chainsaw.
What to expect
The trail begins where the beach meets the tree-line, entering a canopy so dense the temperature drops immediately. Your naturalist guide pauses to identify the Vanikoro white-eye and other endemic bird species by their calls before they come into view. Enormous strangler figs and wild orchids line the path, and the guide illuminates the traditional plant knowledge still practised in the island's villages. Midway, a forest clearing provides a jaw-dropping view down to the reef — a natural panorama no road or viewpoint exists to offer.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required — uneven terrain, some scrambling. Wear long sleeves and sturdy closed-toe shoes; bring insect repellent. Trail access is limited by the community — strictly private groups of 6 or fewer. Allow 3.5 hours. Return well before all-aboard to allow for tender transit.
