Join one of Ireland's foremost birding experts on Cape Clear Island, home to Ireland's oldest bird observatory and a legendary autumn migration hotspot. Spot rare migrants, resident choughs, and — offshore — whales and basking sharks on this extraordinary natural stage.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the harbour and leads you along the island's elevated cliff paths, pausing at key vantage points where the observatory's daily log reveals what rare migrants have been recorded that morning. Resident choughs tumble aerobatically above the headlands while fulmars glide effortlessly on updrafts. From Pointabullig and the south-facing cliffs, your expert scans the Atlantic for fin whales, minke whales, and, in season, the enormous silhouette of a basking shark. The walk covers approximately 4–5 km of gentle to moderate coastal terrain with stops for binoculars and spotting scopes.
Good to know
Cape Clear is best for rare birds in spring (May) and autumn (Sept–Oct), but wildlife is year-round. Wear sturdy walking shoes and layers. Pre-arrange the guided walk directly with the observatory by email or phone before your cruise calls. Allow 3–4 hours; confirm all-aboard time.
