Cape Clear Island: Medieval O'Driscoll Castle & Heritage Trail

Discover the atmospheric ruins of Dunanore Castle, the 15th-century stronghold of the O'Driscoll chieftains who once controlled all shipping along this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. A self-guided heritage trail unlocks the island's remarkable layered history.

What to expect

Walk a short trail north from the harbour to Dunanore Castle, perched dramatically above the sea on a rocky promontory — the O'Driscolls levied tolls on every ship passing between here and Fastnet Rock, making them among the wealthiest clans in medieval Munster. The ruins are atmospheric and largely unvisited, offering a genuine sense of discovery. Continue to the island's small but absorbing Heritage Centre, where artefacts, maps, and oral history recordings illuminate 6,000 years of human habitation, including a Neolithic standing stone and evidence of early Christian monks. The entire trail covers 3–4 km of easy walking with sweeping sea views throughout.

Good to know

The Heritage Centre keeps seasonal hours (typically May–September); confirm opening before your visit. The castle walk is accessible year-round and free. Wear comfortable walking shoes; paths are partly unpaved. Allow 2–3 hours for castle, heritage centre, and a leisurely return along the clifftop path.
