ATV Quad Biking in Phuket: Worth It?

Expect a mix of fun and chaos. Most ATV tours take you through red dirt tracks, rubber plantations, and short jungle sections with a few muddy hills and stream crossings. The highlight is usually a stop at a viewpoint near the Big Buddha for photos. It's genuinely bumpy and dusty – you'll finish covered in dirt. Beginners get a quick lesson; experienced riders will find it tame but still enjoyable. Tours last 30 minutes to two hours. The shorter ones feel rushed while the longer ones give you more riding time and fewer people per group.

Best time is December to March when it's dry. June to October is the wet season – trails get slippery and some operators cancel or shorten rides. Expect to pay around $35–65 per person depending on duration and whether transport and insurance are included. Longer tours with a Big Buddha stop usually sit at the higher end.

Pick a 1–2 hour tour that includes the viewpoint and has small groups; these give you decent riding time without feeling like a conveyor belt. Skip the 30-minute “express” versions unless you just want a quick taster – they're over before you've figured out the controls. Always wear the provided goggles and closed shoes; flip-flops are a bad idea.
