Fort Charlotte in Nassau: Worth a Visit?

Fort Charlotte is a solid, low-key stop if you want a bit of history and a killer view without the crowds of the main cruise port attractions. Built in the late 1700s, it's Nassau's largest fort. You'll walk the ramparts, see old cannons, explore a dry moat and some dungeon-like rooms, and get sweeping panoramas over the harbor and city. Expect a straightforward historic site rather than a theme-park experience – it's interesting for 45-90 minutes if you like that sort of thing, but it can feel a little empty and hot once you've seen the main areas. Guides add decent context on its British colonial past.

Best time to go is the cooler months from December to April when the heat isn't brutal and rain is less likely. Avoid midday in summer. From the cruise docks it's roughly a 30-minute walk past Junkanoo Beach, or you can grab a short taxi. Expect to pay around $6-8 per person for entry. A half-day guided city tour that includes it typically runs $70-90 per person.

Tip: do it on your own if you're comfortable walking – the fort is easy to explore without a group. Skip it if you're short on time or not into military history; the view is the real highlight. Wear good shoes and bring water – there's not much shade once you're up on the walls.
