Golden Circle Day Trip from Reykjavik: Worth It?

The Golden Circle is a 300 km loop that most people do in 6.5–8 hours from Reykjavik. You’ll see three main sights: the Geysir geothermal area (geysers erupting every 5–10 minutes), Gullfoss waterfall (loud, powerful, and impressive in any weather), and Þingvellir National Park (where you can walk between tectonic plates and see the site of the old parliament). Many tours now also stop at Kerid crater, a pretty red volcanic cone with a blue lake. Expect a full bus day with 30–45 minutes at each major stop. The scenery is stark and beautiful but you won’t be alone—especially in summer it gets crowded.

Best time is May or September when crowds are lighter and you still have decent daylight. In peak summer (June–August) it’s busy but you get the longest days and best chance of good weather. Winter tours run too but expect shorter daylight, possible ice on paths, and fewer departures. Expect to pay around $90–140 per person for a standard coach tour including pickup; private or small-group options push $200–350. Skip the overpriced “premium” tours with extra stops that just add fatigue. One honest tip: if you’re comfortable driving, rent a car instead—you’ll go at your own pace and avoid the big groups at Geysir and Gullfoss. If you must join a tour, pick one that visits Kerid and does Þingvellir last so you’re not rushed at the most interesting cultural site.
